Diagnosed With Friedreich’s Ataxia
When Kyle Bryant was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA)—a rare, progressive neuromuscular disorder—at 17, he turned to what he loved most: cycling. What started as a personal challenge soon became a mission to make a difference.
By age 26, after a cross-country ride from San Diego to Memphis, Kyle founded rideATAXIA, a program of the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). Today, rideATAXIA organizes cycling events across the U.S. to fund FA research, with locations in five states. Despite trading his standard bike for a Catrike 700, Kyle’s drive remains unwavering.
“Cycling and fundraising became our therapy—how we dealt with the disease and continue to deal with it,” he says.
One Ride at a Time
Kyle also channels his determination into clinical trials, viewing his participation as a critical piece of the “puzzle” to cure FA. Since his early twenties, he has volunteered for studies, enduring rigorous protocols like frequent blood draws during inpatient trials.
“I participate because I want to push the science forward,” Kyle explains. “Even if these drugs aren’t helpful for me now, they will help find something in the future.”
This year alone, Kyle biked up Mt. Evans, the highest paved road in the U.S., and is eyeing a European cycle tour. His commitment to research and fundraising continues to inspire hope for FA patients and families. One rideATAXIA event and clinical trial at a time, Kyle is proving there are no limits to what determination can achieve.
